Castillo de Salobreña
Salobreña, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Salobreña is a 10th-century trapezoidal fortress overlooking the Mediterranean in Salobreña, Granada province, Spain, with its current Nasrid-era structure featuring three enclosures: an inner palatial alcázar with four towers (Torre del Homenaje, Torre Nueva, Torre del Polvorín, and Torre Vieja) plus Christian defensive extensions from the late 15th century including El Cubo, La Batería, Torre del Agua, and the Coracha water defense. Originally built to control the medina, port, and countryside, it served as a royal prison for sultans like Muley Hacén during Granada's frontier wars, surrendering to the Catholic Monarchs in 1489 before earthquake damage and 18th-century artillery upgrades. Recently restored to highlight its palatine baths and military evolution, the clifftop ruins offer sweeping sea-to-Sierra Nevada views as a protected Bien de Interés Cultural.
