Castillo de San Andrés
San Andrés, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, Spain
Castillo de San Andrés is an early 18th-century coastal fortress in the San Andrés district of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, built around 1706 to protect the local beach and ships from pirate raids.
Positioned near a stream in the former Valle de Salazar, it played a key role in 1797 by firing on British Admiral Horatio Nelson's ship Theseus during his failed invasion attempt, damaging its mast and rigging.
Partially ruined by floods from adjacent ravines, the remaining structure was declared a Spanish Historic Heritage site in 1967 and Canary Islands Cultural Interest asset in 1999, now serving as a public landmark despite ongoing deterioration risks.
