Castillo de San Cristobal
Spain, Spain
Castillo de San Cristóbal was a key 16th-century fortress in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, constructed between 1575 and 1577 under Governor Juan Álvarez de Fonseca to safeguard the vital port from pirate raids and invasions.
Positioned squarely in what is now Plaza de España on a rocky reef in Bias Diaz Cove, its robust corner ramparts and artillery defended against major assaults by admirals Blake in 1657, Jennings in 1706, and famously Horatio Nelson in 1797, where the "El Tigre" cannon and local resistance famously repelled the British fleet.
Demolished in 1928 for urban development, its buried remains were rediscovered in 2006 during plaza renovations, now preserved with an interpretation center highlighting Tenerife's military heritage.
