Castillo de San Joaquín
Spain, Spain
Castillo de San Joaquín is an 18th-century inland square fortification with circular corner towers, located in La Cuesta between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de La Laguna on Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.
Originally platforms built in 1586 by Italian engineer Leonardo Torriani under Governor Juan Núñez de la Fuente, it was reconstructed as a full castle starting in 1780 to defend the island's interior if coastal forts fell to invaders.
Featuring a central courtyard, gunpowder storage towers, and barracks, its exterior remains intact while interiors adapted over time as prison, munitions dump, and dovecote before private sale in 1996, leaving it in ruins as a protected Cultural Interest Monument.
