Castillo de San Leonardo de Yagüe
San Leonardo de Yagüe, Spain, Spain
Castillo de San Leonardo de Yagüe is a unique 16th-century Renaissance bastioned fortress-palace overlooking the village of San Leonardo de Yagüe in Soria province, Spain.
Built between 1563 and 1567 by nobleman Juan Manrique de Lara with architect Bartolomé Carlone, it features a rectangular base, inner courtyard, four robust corner bastions for firearm defense, grand classical windows, and ornate interiors contrasting its sober military exterior.
As Spain's first bastioned castle of its kind and a model for American fortifications, its stones were later quarried for local buildings, leaving ruins now partially excavated and needing preservation.
