Castillo de San Lorenzo del Puntal
Cádiz, Spain, Spain
Castillo de San Lorenzo del Puntal, also known as Castillo de Puntales, is a 16th-century fortress on a marshy spit of land at the entrance to Cádiz Bay in Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain, designed to protect the city from landside invasions. Its origins trace to 1554 plans by engineer Juan Bautista Calvi, evolving from a modest 1588 artillery tower into a robust structure under Cristóbal de Rojas and Alonso de Vandelvira after Anglo-Dutch forces destroyed it during their 1596 sack of Cádiz. Key in repelling Napoleon's troops for 30 months during the 1810-1812 Peninsular War siege, it was rebuilt in 1863 and now serves as a Spanish naval facility, protected as a cultural heritage site since 1993 with innovative early concrete defenses.
