Castillo de San Luis
Estepona, Spain, Spain
Castillo de San Luis is a 16th-century coastal fortress in Estepona on Spain's Costa del Sol, built after the 1568 Morisco revolt to defend against Berber pirate raids by reinforcing the town's medieval Islamic walls with three artillery bastions, a porticoed plaza de armas, and gunports overlooking Rada beach.
Originally replacing an earlier Arab structure called Estebbuna—from which Estepona derives its name—and designed by engineer Juan Ambrosio Malgrá, its pentagonal Mediodía bastion and southwest curtain wall survive, showcasing Moorish-influenced arches amid rammed-earth fortifications later adapted into an 18th-century battery.
Recently restored and revealed from urban overgrowth, these remnants offer a glimpse into Estepona's defensive evolution amid its whitewashed old town.
