Castillo de San Pedro
Níjar, Spain, Spain
Castillo de San Pedro is an 18th-century coastal fortress in Cala San Pedro near Las Negras, Níjar municipality, Almería province, Andalusia, Spain, built on the ruins of a 16th-century Muslim watchtower destroyed by 17th-18th century earthquakes.
Expanded in 1767-1772 by engineer José Crame under Carlos III with a semicircular seaward battery for ten artillery pieces, barracks, and a garrison of an alcaide, guarda almacén, and twelve soldiers, it defended the vital freshwater spring and anchorage against Berber pirates as Cabo de Gata's second-most important fort after San José.
Abandoned in the 19th century after losing its artillery, it passed to private hands amid deterioration and failed hotel proposals, remaining partially ruined with visible masonry walls, a vaulted tower chamber, and adintelado loopholes despite its protected status.
