Castillo de San Ramón / Las Escobetas
Spain, Spain
Castillo de San Ramón, also known as Castillo de las Escobetas or Castillo de Jesús Nazareno, is an 18th-century coastal fortress in Garrucha, Almería province, Andalusia, Spain, built along the AL-5107 road to defend against Berber pirate raids plaguing the local fishing village.
Designed in 1769 by architect Francisco Ruiz Garrido at a cost of 181,000 reales following a temporary barracks erected in 1766, it features a semicircular seaward artillery battery, two circular towers flanking a rectangular central block around a patio, and a truncated pyramid annex with loopholes and external stairs.
Later repurposed as a customs post and Guardia Civil barracks in the 19th century, it has been restored as the Centro Nautarum, a center interpreting local fishing and marine heritage, offering panoramic coastal views in good condition today.
