Castillo de San Ramón (ruinas)
Las Negras, Spain, Spain
Castillo de San Ramón, also known as Batería de San Ramón, is an 18th-century coastal artillery battery in ruins on Playazo de Rodalquilar beach near Las Negras, Níjar municipality, Almería province, Andalusia, Spain.
Built in 1764 under King Carlos III and designed by engineer José Crame at a cost of 200,000 reales to defend Rodalquilar's gold mines from Barbary pirates, its polygonal masonry structure accommodated four cannons across two floors on a fossilized dune, coordinating signals and fire with nearby fortresses like Cala San Pedro.
Damaged during the Peninsular War, occupied sporadically by locals and police, and sold by the state in 1875 for 1,500 pesetas, the site now lies abandoned amid Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, accessible via hiking trails despite some path closures.
