Castillo de San Sebastian
Spain, Spain
Castillo de San Sebastián is a historic 18th-century fortress on a small island at the end of La Caleta beach in Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain, linked to the mainland by a walkway. Its origins trace to a 1457 chapel built by plague-surviving Venetian sailors, evolving into a defensive structure in 1706 with an irregular layout incorporating an ancient Muslim watchtower to protect the city's northern flank. Strengthened in the 19th century with casemates and an electric lighthouse added in 1908, it served military roles including as a quarantine site and prison before gaining cultural heritage status in 1993.
