Castillo de San Vicente (Ruinas)
Hinojosa de San Vicente, Spain, Spain
The Castillo de San Vicente, or Castle of San Vicente, consists of medieval ruins atop the Cerro de San Vicente (1,321 meters) near Hinojosa de San Vicente in northern Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, strategically positioned to overlook the confluence of the Alberche and Tajo rivers and passes toward central Spain.
Likely originating as a Muslim fortress in the 10th century, it was repurposed after the Christian Reconquista, possibly by the Knights Templar or Canónigos Regulares from a Toledo abbey around 1156-1158, with traditions attributing its strongholds to both Islamic builders and monastic orders.
The small defensive castillete features remnants of two fallen towerons and nearby vestiges of an ancient abbey and 17th-century hermita, now accessible by a steep hike offering panoramic views amid the Sierra de San Vicente.
