Castillo de Sancti-Petri
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Sancti-Petri is a 16th-century fortress on a rocky islet guarding the mouth of the Sancti Petri channel near Chiclana de la Frontera in Cádiz province, Andalusia, Spain, with roots possibly tracing to Roman watchtowers and medieval fortifications. Commissioned by Philip II to counter pirate raids, it expanded in the 18th century under Ferdinand VI and Charles III with artillery batteries, walls, and outbuildings to shield Cádiz Bay from British, French, Dutch, and Berber threats, forming a key link with nearby defenses like Urrutia and San Genís. During the Peninsular War's 1810-1812 sieges, it heroically resisted Napoleonic assaults alongside Cádiz's defenses, later serving maritime roles before designation as a Bien de Interés Cultural.
