Castillo de Santa Ana
Roquetas de Mar, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Santa Ana in Roquetas de Mar, Almería province, Spain, began as a 14th-century Nasrid watchtower built by Yusuf I to defend the coast.
Expanded into a square fortress around 1501 to shield locals and salt trade from Berber pirate raids, it featured corner turrets and later additions like a moat, though much was ruined by 17th- and 18th-century disasters including earthquakes and lightning strikes.
Reconstructed in 2003 using original plans, the site now preserves an intact 18th-century armory with cannons and serves as a cultural center for art exhibitions and events.
