Castillo de Santa Catalina
El Puerto de Santa María, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Santa Catalina in El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz province, Spain, is a 16th-century coastal fortress originally built as a defensive tower around 1580 to protect the Bay of Cádiz entrance from naval attacks, including those by the English in 1587 and 1596.
Expanded into a full castle under orders from Philip II and later Carlos V, its truncated conical tower with artillery vaults overlooked the harbor alongside the complementary San Felipe fort, forming a key part of the regional defense system.
Despite reinforcements, it faced destruction in 1702, 1810 by retreating forces, and occupation in 1824, leaving ruins today that include remnants of its plaza de armas and sea defenses, now viewable as a historical site amid the coastal landscape.
