Castillo de Santa Eufemia
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Santa Eufemia is a medieval fortress ruin in Linares, Jaén province, Spain, perched atop the ancient Iberian-Roman city of Cástulo, one of Hispania's most important urban centers that thrived from the 3rd century BCE through Roman times.
Originally an Islamic watchtower from the 11th-13th centuries, it was repurposed as a Christian keep after the 1227 conquest, forming a modest walled enclosure to guard the frontier against Granada amid the Reconquista.
Abandoned by the late Middle Ages, its stones were quarried for nearby Baeza and Úbeda, leaving scant remnants today as part of Cástulo's archaeological legacy.
