Castillo de Santibáñez el Alto
Santibáñez el Alto, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Santibáñez el Alto, also known as the Fortress of San Juan de Mascoras, is a medieval stronghold in the village of Santibáñez el Alto, Cáceres province, Extremadura, Spain, within the Sierra de Gata region.
Originating as a 9th-century Muslim fortress rebuilt in the 11th-12th centuries, it was conquered by Christians around 1185 and entrusted first to the Knights Templar before passing to the Order of Alcántara under Alfonso IX, serving as a key defensive outpost during the Reconquista with features like a keep tower, albarrana towers, and well-preserved walls integrated into local structures.
Reformed in the 16th century by architect Pedro de Ybarra, the now-ruined castle retains strategic hilltop views and symbolizes Templar legacy, attracting visitors to its historic site amid rural landscapes.
