Castillo de Sarracín (Ruinas)
Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Sarracín is a ruined medieval fortress atop Castro Martín hill in Vega de Valcarce, El Bierzo region of León province, Spain, strategically dominating the Valcarce valley as a key gateway to Galicia along the Camino de Santiago.
Originating from a 10th-century structure possibly built by Count Gatón del Bierzo during Ordoño I's reign after Muslim incursions, it was rebuilt in the 14th century under the Marquis of Villafranca, earning fame as inexpugnable for resisting Irmandiño revolts and hosting the Catholic Monarchs in 1486 and Charles V in 1520.
Today, only remnants like 14th-century walls, a tower with flared loopholes, and porticos survive amid progressive abandonment, tied to legends of Count Sarracino rather than Moorish origins despite its name.
