Castillo de Tíscar
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Tíscar, also called Peñas Negras Castle, is a medieval Muslim fortress perched on a rocky 959-meter ridge near the Tíscar Virgin Sanctuary, 15 km south of Quesada in Jaén province, Spain. First documented in 876 AD when Córdoba troops destroyed it during rebel conflicts, it was conquered by Ferdinand III in 1224, briefly held by Christians under Archbishop Ximénez de Rada, then retaken by Muslims until Pedro I's daring 1319 night assault led by Pedro Hidalgo, who scaled Peña Negra to slay guards and enable victory. Featuring a rectangular keep, steep black rock natural defenses, and enclosure walls, local legends credit the Virgin of Tíscar's miraculous aid; now a protected Cultural Interest site amid stunning gorges, it offers hikes blending military history and pilgrimage lore.
