Castillo de Torre Benzalá
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Torre Benzalá, also known as Torre Venzala or Torre Benzala, is a rural medieval watchtower ruin situated on Cerro Ben-Zala hill near Torredonjimeno in Jaén province, Spain, about 9 km from the town amid olive groves and close to the Roman site of Bastora.
Likely constructed between 1242-1246 shortly after the Christian conquest and the 1246 Pact of Jaén, it formed part of fortifications defending against Nasrid threats, featuring a large square tower foundation, corner towers, and a triangular walled enclosure as documented in 1639 by Ximena Jurado.
Now heavily deteriorated with scattered masonry remnants, it represents early Castilian border defenses in al-Andalus, preserved as an archaeological site of cultural interest.
