Castillo de Úrbel
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Úrbel is a medieval fortress perched on a conical limestone peak in Úrbel del Castillo village, Burgos province, Castilla y León, Spain, with origins in the 9th century as a sentinel during Castile's early expansion from the Cantabrian Mountains.
Documented by 1029 alongside nearby Castillo de La Piedra, it guarded the upper Úrbel River against invasions, shifting roles after 1028 when Navarre's Sancho III briefly controlled it until Diego Laínez—father of El Cid—secured it for Castile in 1054 following the Battle of Atapuerca.
Rebuilt in Gothic style by the Zúñiga family in the late 14th-early 15th centuries, it later oversaw Mesta sheep trails before falling into picturesque ruin, embodying Castile's frontier struggles.
