Castillo de Valdecorneja
El Barco de Ávila, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Valdecorneja is a medieval fortress built on a pre-Roman Vettonian castro in El Barco de Ávila, Ávila province, Spain, originally constructed in the 12th century and extensively rebuilt in the 14th-15th centuries.
Dominating the Tormes River valley from its elevated position, this square-plan stronghold spans about 1,700 square meters with a Gothic main gate featuring large voussoirs, a prominent square keep tower, and remnants of vanished features like a moat, drawbridge, dovecote, and stables.
Linked to the powerful Álvarez de Toledo family (Dukes of Alba) through the Valdecorneja lordship alongside Oropesa, it served defensive and noble purposes; well-preserved externally, its ruins are visitable (closed Thursdays) offering spectacular valley views amid the town's historic core.
