Castillo de Zumel o de Zumbel
Jaén, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Zumel, also called Castillejo de Zumbel, is an Islamic rural fortification ruin from the Almohad period (likely 11th-12th century) south of Jaén province, Spain, near the Camino de los Villares a Otíñar amid olive groves.
It features a small rectangular enclosure with thick masonry walls, a prominent tower base, adjacent medieval cistern (aljibe), water mine, albacara livestock pen, and path remnants, reflecting frontier defense and water management in al-Andalus.
Stamped ceramics confirm its use into the 12th century, with the site now preserved as an archaeological testament to early Islamic settlement before the Christian Reconquista.
