Castillo del Rey
San Vicente de la Barquera, Spain, Spain
Castillo del Rey, also known as the Castle of San Vicente de la Barquera, is a 13th-century medieval fortress crowning a rocky hill in the old town of San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria, Spain, possibly originating from an earlier structure during Alfonso I of Asturias' repopulation efforts.
Measuring about 54 meters long by 20 meters wide with an irregular layout adapting to the terrain, it features thick masonry walls up to 2.5 meters, a square eastern tower, a pentagonal western keep, and remnants of a former barrel vault, forming part of the town's defensive system alongside walls.
Restored in the 1990s after serving as a prison under the Catholic Monarchs, it now functions as a museum displaying medieval artifacts like cannons and ship models, offering panoramic coastal views.
