Castillo Fortaleza de Archidona
Spain, Spain
Castillo Fortaleza de Archidona in Archidona, Málaga province, Spain, is a 9th-century Arab fortress on Cerro de Gracia, rebuilt in the 13th century by Alhamar, the first Nasrid king, to defend the strategic heights above the ancient town of Arcis Domina.
Its irregular layout features thick defensive walls enclosing a vanished medina, with visible remnants like the Puerta de la Ciudad and Puerta del Sol gates, plus prehistoric roots tracing to Neolithic settlements and Roman fortifications.
Conquered by Christians under the Count of Osuna in 1462, it later integrated into the Parque Periurbano Sierra de Gracia as a Bien de Interés Cultural, offering panoramic views amid olive groves despite substantial ruins from centuries of frontier conflicts.
