Castillo Mayor de Daroca
Daroca, Spain, Spain
Castillo Mayor de Daroca is an 11th-century Muslim alcazaba crowning a hill overlooking the historic town of Daroca in Zaragoza province, Aragon, Spain, originally constructed atop a 9th-century primitive Muslim fortification as part of a defensive system spanning nearly 4 km of walls with 114 towers.
Measuring 80 by 30 meters in an oval layout blending into the eroded terrain, it features a prominent square-based tower of mortar and masonry with a pointed arch, remnants of surrounding masonry-mud walls, the detached masonry Torre de Zoma, and a square tank, strategically positioned to dominate the Colegiata and surrounding plains.
Linked to El Cid's campaigns—including his tribute collection after the Battle of Alcocer and agreements with the Count of Barcelona—it endured sieges through the War of the Two Peters, Peninsular War, and Carlist Wars until 19th-century reforms, now preserved as evocative ruins offering panoramic town views amid Daroca's Mudejar heritage.
