Castillo de Peñas de San Pedro crowns a massive, nearly sheer rock formation in Peñas de San Pedro, Albacete province, Castile-La Mancha, Spain, originating as an Islamic fortress from the Taifa of Murcia era to guard western frontiers against Andalusian incursions.

Conquered by Alfonso VIII in the 13th century during the Reconquista, it evolved into a formidable Christian stronghold with over a kilometer of defensive walls, barracks, cisterns, ovens, and a church later repurposed as an arsenal until destroyed by lightning, anchoring the medieval village atop the crag before relocation to the valley below in 1537 by Charles V.

Now amid restoration with accessible trails offering sweeping views of Albacete plains and Sierra de Alcaraz foothills, the ruins highlight its impregnable design and turbulent history through sieges and shifting lords.
