Castillo Sohail
Fuengirola, Spain, Spain
Castillo Sohail in Fuengirola, Málaga province, Spain, originated as a Roman settlement called Suel before being fortified by Caliph Abd-ar-Rahman III in 956 AD as a coastal defense outpost, later expanded by Almoravids in the 12th century with irregular walls and towers adapted to its 38-meter hilltop at the Fuengirola River mouth.
Captured by Christians in 1485 during the Reconquista and further modified for artillery, it famously withstood a 1810 Napoleonic siege in the Battle of Fuengirola defended by Polish and French troops against British forces.
Extensively restored in the late 20th century, this well-preserved fortress now functions as a cultural venue hosting concerts, festivals, and exhibitions with stunning Mediterranean views.
