Castillo Templario de Higuera de Vargas
Higuera de Vargas, Spain, Spain
Castillo Templario de Higuera de Vargas, also known as Castillo del Coso, is a 13th-century fortress constructed by the Knights Templar in Higuera de Vargas, Badajoz province, Extremadura, Spain, after King Alfonso IX donated the site around 1230 to bolster Reconquista defenses.
The rectangular stronghold features thick stone walls, four octagonal corner towers with merlons, a central courtyard for arms, and a grand lintel gateway framed by a palatial facade, later passing to the Fernández de Vargas family via Enrique II's 1374 grant before Portuguese conquest damage in 1643.
Recently acquired and restored by the local council, the conserved ruins host cultural events amid the village's clustered layout, blending Templar military architecture with noble adaptations.
