Castillo Torre
Alquézar, Spain, Spain
Castillo Torre in Alquézar, Spain, refers to the historic castle atop a steep rock in this medieval village in Huesca, Aragon, originally built as a Moorish fortress in the 9th century by Jalaf ibn Rasid to guard against Christian advances from Sobrarbe.
Conquered by Christians under Sancho Ramírez in 1067, it was fortified by Abbot Banzo with a prominent tower to spread Christianity and repel Moors, later evolving between the 15th and 16th centuries into a crenellated stronghold with a Gothic doorway known as La Mazmorra de las Santas, featuring a bas-relief of martyrs Nunilo and Alodia.
Now integrated into the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, a Site of Historic-Artistic Significance with Romanesque cloisters and frescoes, it overlooks labyrinthine streets and the Vero River gorges, symbolizing centuries of cultural transition.
