Castillo y Murallas de Gibraleón
Gibraleón, Spain, Spain
Castillo y Murallas de Gibraleón are remnants of a 13th-14th century fortress in Gibraleón, Huelva province, Spain, built atop 11th-century Almohad foundations to control the Río Odiel crossing and vital Seville-Lisbon route against invasions. Originally featuring a trapezoidal walled enclosure with up to eight towers—four visible today including a large 10th-century southern gatehouse of tapial construction—it evolved into a noble alcázar for the dukes of Béjar and marqueses of Gibraleón amid noble feuds between Medinaceli and Guzmán houses. Reformed with 17th-century abaluarted walls during the Portuguese Restoration War, the ruins now show mixed Roman sillar, tapial, and brickwork in a poor state of conservation despite archaeological excavations.
