Castle Aguilar de Campoo
Aguilar de Campoo, Spain, Spain
Castle Aguilar de Campoo is a medieval fortress of trapezoidal plan in Aguilar de Campoo, Palencia province, Castile and León, Spain, originating from a defensive tower during the Reconquista around 1039 and extensively rebuilt in the 12th-15th centuries atop Celt-Iberian remains.
Featuring thick stone walls with corner towers, a main eastern entrance under Gothic-arched escutcheons of the Manrique family, and an inner enclosure with a high-point tower, it hosted key events like the 1184 General Junta of the Kingdom and the 14th-century imprisonment of a cardinal by Pedro the Cruel.
Damaged in the Spanish Civil War and restored in the 1960s, the scenic ruins perched on a 970-meter crag now overlook the town's historic core, medieval walls, and Pisuerga River valley.
