Castle Almonacid of Toledo (ruins)
Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Almonacid de Toledo consists of imposing ruins on a hilltop dominating the village of Almonacid de Toledo in Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain.
First documented in 848 as a Moorish fortress protecting Toledo, it passed to Alfonso VI in the 11th century via his wife Zaida's dowry, was donated to Toledo's cathedral, and underwent major 14th-century reforms under Archbishop Pedro Tenorio, including a polygonal layout with five towers—two square, three cylindrical—and a central keep for prolonged sieges.
Used as a prison for Alfonso of Gijón and refuge for General Venegas's troops in the 1809 Battle of Almonacid against the French—who captured and partially destroyed it—its decline accelerated in 1839 when locals quarried its materials, though remnants of walls, merlons, and the barbacana tower (collapsed in 2025) endure.
