Castle Carchuna
Carchuna, Spain, Spain
Castle Carchuna is an 18th-century coastal fortress in Carchuna, Granada province, Spain, constructed between 1773 and 1783 under King Carlos III to protect against Berber pirate raids along the Costa Tropical.
This square military structure housed infantry, cavalry patrols, gunners, and a chaplain, with four cannons and a central parade ground exemplifying period engineering, later damaged by French and British forces.
During the 1938 Spanish Civil War, it served as a Republican prisoner camp where Asturian soldiers staged a dramatic amphibious rescue, and it underwent renovations including a 2015 project to preserve its panoramic sea views amid modern greenhouses.
