Castle Cooke

Knockatrisnane, Ireland, Ireland

Castle Cooke is a historic tower house located in the townland of Knockatrisnane (also spelled Knockatrasnane), County Cork, Ireland. Originally built by the Condon family in the 16th century and known as Dun Gallane, it later passed to the Cooke family, who gave the castle its current name. The castle stands on a steep site overlooking the Araglin River and is known for its rectangular design with distinctive rounded corners, a feature that helped improve its defenses. The structure once rose several storeys high and included defensive elements, living quarters, fireplaces, and narrow stairways typical of late medieval Irish tower houses. Although now partly ruined and covered in places by ivy, Castle Cooke remains an impressive example of Ireland’s medieval fortified architecture. The surrounding area is rural and scenic, reflecting the rich history and heritage of north County Cork.
