Castle Freke is a historic castle and estate located in Castlefreke, County Cork, near the Atlantic coast and Long Strand beach. The site began as a 15th-century tower house owned by the Barry family before passing to the Freke family in the early 17th century, becoming the ancestral seat of the Barons Carbery. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the castle was rebuilt and transformed into a grand Gothic Revival mansion with towers, battlements, and impressive architectural features. A major fire in 1910 severely damaged the building, and after changing ownership, much of the structure fell into disuse during the 20th century. Today, Castle Freke remains one of West Cork's most recognizable landmarks. Surrounded by historic woodland, walking trails, and scenic coastal landscapes, it is admired for its striking appearance, rich family history, and ongoing restoration efforts aimed at preserving this important piece of Irish heritage.
