Castle Hackett is a historic ruined castle located near Belclare, at the base of Knockma Hill in County Galway, western Ireland. The site dates back to the 13th century and was originally built by the Norman Hackett family before later coming into the ownership of the Kirwan family, one of the famous Tribes of Galway. The castle is a medieval tower house that was expanded and modified over the centuries, remaining occupied until the 18th century. Today, its ivy-covered stone walls and striking rural setting make it a notable local landmark and a reminder of Ireland’s medieval past. Castle Hackett is also connected with Irish folklore. The nearby Knockma Hill is associated with the legendary fairy king Finvarra, and writer W. B. Yeats referenced the Hackett family in connection with local fairy traditions. Although the castle is now a ruin and is not generally open to the public, it remains a popular sight for visitors exploring County Galway’s rich heritage, history, and scenic countryside.
