Castle Iznalloz
Spain, Spain
Castle of Iznalloz, known as Castillo de los Almendros or "Castle of the Almond Trees," is a Moorish fortress atop the hill overlooking Iznalloz village in Granada province, Spain, with origins tracing to a Roman garrison later rebuilt by Arabs as Hisn Allauz to defend a key Roman road and frontier during the Reconquista. Captured by the Catholic Monarchs in 1486 alongside neighboring towns to aid Granada's siege, its ruins include two prominent towers amid the old quarter, symbolizing centuries of strategic almond-surrounded defense before transitioning to a post-Reconquista commerce hub. Today, the site complements local Iberian caves, Jurassic formations like Cueva del Agua, and the enduring 16th-century Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios designed by Diego de Siloé.
