Castle Matrix is a historic 15th-century tower house located near Rathkeale in County Limerick. Built by the powerful Fitzgerald Earls of Desmond, it served as an important fortified residence overlooking the River Deel and became closely linked with some of the most influential families in Munster. The castle is associated with several notable events and figures from Irish history. It is remembered as the site of the 1487 murder of James FitzGerald, Earl of Desmond, and is also connected with Sir Walter Raleigh and the poet Edmund Spenser. In later centuries, it became the home of the Southwell family, who played a key role in settling German Palatine refugees in the Rathkeale area. Although altered and restored several times over the centuries, Castle Matrix remains one of County Limerick’s most distinctive tower houses. Its long history, architectural character, and links to important historical figures make it a significant landmark in the region’s heritage.
