Castle Mombeltrán
Mombeltrán, Spain, Spain
Castle of Mombeltrán, also known as the Castle of the Dukes of Alburquerque, stands in Mombeltrán, Ávila province, Spain, built between 1462 and 1474 by Don Beltrán de la Cueva, first Duke of Alburquerque, on a strategic hilltop site possibly replacing an earlier fortress.
Attributed to architect Juan Guas for its similarities to Belmonte and Manzanares el Real castles, it features a square layout of rubble and granite with circular corner towers, including a large keep, surrounded by a barbican wall, and later adapted in the 16th century with a Renaissance doorway after filling its moat.
Donated by King Henry IV in 1461, this Cultural Interest Site blending military strength and palatial luxury remains privately owned by the Dukes of Alburquerque amid the scenic Sierra de Gredos.
