Castle of Albons
Albons, Spain, Spain
Castle of Albons is a 10th-century medieval fortress situated at the heart of Albons village in Baix Empordà, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain, strategically positioned on a hill between the Ter and Fluvià rivers.
First documented that century amid frontier disputes between the Counts of Empúries, the King of Aragon, and the Bishop of Girona, it passed to the Crown in 1272 after Viscount Dalmau VI de Rocabertí's exchange, briefly held by Count Ponç V before royal reclamation due to fortification concerns alongside nearby Bellcaire.
Evolving into a fortified farmhouse by the 15th century with later modifications, its remains include a grand voussoir portal, partial enclosure walls adjacent to Sant Cugat church, and a courtyard, now privately owned but declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest shaping the town's historic core.
