Castle of Atienza
Spain, Spain
Castle of Atienza crowns a rocky hilltop in the town of Atienza, Guadalajara province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, as one of the region's most formidable medieval fortresses with origins in Roman and Visigothic fortifications later fortified by Muslims in the 9th-10th centuries.
Frequently changing hands during the Reconquista—surrendering briefly to Alfonso III in 870, recaptured by Al-Hakam II in 967, and finally conquered by Alfonso VI in 1085—it anchored defenses along the Duero River frontier, expanded with a large tower keep, arched entry flanked by square turrets, two rock-carved cisterns, and double protective walls.
Occupied by Navarrese forces under John II, it later served as a prison before French sacking in the Peninsular War, now preserved as a Bien de Interés Cultural offering panoramic views amid the town's Romanesque heritage.
