Castle of Biar
Biar, Spain, Spain
Castle of Biar is a well-preserved 12th-century Almohad fortress overlooking the town of Biar in Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain, strategically positioned on a rocky hillock in the Alt Vinalopó comarca.
Originally built as a Muslim frontier stronghold and reinforced by Christians after the Reconquista under James I, it features a double enclosure with semi-cylindrical towers, battlements, arrow slits, and a standout 17-meter Tower of Homage containing the only known Almohad ribbed vault in Spanish military architecture.
Declared a National Monument in 1931, the castle offers panoramic views and now serves as a cultural landmark along the Route of the Vinalopó Castles, blending Moorish and late Romanesque-Gothic elements amid the region's Mediterranean landscapes.
