Castle of Buitrago
Buitrago del Lozoya, Spain, Spain
The Castle of Buitrago del Lozoya is a 15th-century Gothic-Mudéjar fortress situated within the medieval walled town of Buitrago del Lozoya along the Lozoya River in Madrid's Sierra Norte region, Spain.
Commissioned by Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, Duke of the Infantado, on possible earlier Muslim foundations referenced from the 12th century, it features a rectangular layout with seven stone towers of varied shapes - round, pentagonal, and square thick brick-and-masonry walls laid in horizontal bands, a central patio de armas once surrounded by a foso, and a recessed double-arched entry gate.
Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1931, the largely ruined interior now hosts cultural events like bullfighting in the courtyard and overlooks historic visits by figures such as Joanna la Beltraneja and kings John II and Philip III.
