Castle of Castalla
Spain, Spain
Castle of Castalla is an 11th-century fortress of Arab origin crowning a hilltop above the town of Castalla in Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain, strategically positioned to control routes through the Foia de Castalla valley.
Its current structure reflects two main phases Muslim walls and towers alongside Christian additions like the 16th-century Torre Grossa for pirate defense with a large bailey, palace residence, cistern, and battlements adapting to the terrain amid masonry construction.
Extensively restored in the 21st century through archaeological work revealing 4,000-year-old settlements, the site now serves as a heritage park offering panoramic views, interpretive trails, and exhibits on its Reconquista role under James I after 1244.
