Castle of Castillo de Garcimuñoz
Castillo de Garcimuñoz, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Garcimuñoz in Castillo de Garcimuñoz, Cuenca province, Spain, began as an early Muslim fortress from the 10th century before being rebuilt in the mid-15th century by Don Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, over earlier ruins in a transitional Gothic-Renaissance style with Italian influences.
The robust square structure features thick circular corner towers, wide platforms, and well-preserved exterior walls with embrasures, though the interior was largely destroyed and later repurposed, including as a 19th-century cemetery.
Recently restored between 2010-2016 by architect Izaskun Chinchilla with lightweight, reversible elements like footbridges and platforms distinguishing old from new, it now functions as a cultural mediatheque blending heritage preservation with modern public use.
