Castle of Castrotorafe
Spain, Spain
Castle of Castrotorafe stands as evocative ruins in the abandoned village of Castrotorafe (San Cebrián de Castro), Zamora province, Castilla y León, Spain, beside the Esla River.
Emerging as a medieval defensive settlement possibly on Roman foundations like Vico Aquario, it gained prominence in 1129 when Alfonso VII granted jurisdiction, with initial walls built around that time to control vital routes between Castilla, Galicia, and Portugal.
Controlled by the Order of Santiago from 1176 and constructed before 1319 per Juan de Castilla's will, the fortress featured a large moat and strategic hilltop position, enduring sieges until declared a National Monument in 1931, with recent consolidations preserving its walls amid scenic reservoir views.
