Castle of Chinchón
Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Chinchón, also known as the Castle of the Counts of Chinchón, is a late 15th-century Renaissance fortress overlooking the historic town of Chinchón in Spain's Community of Madrid.
Originally constructed by the counts on earlier ruins and destroyed during the 1520 Revolt of the Comuneros, it was rebuilt in the mid-16th century by the third Count, Diego Fernández de Cabrera, with robust horizontal walls, sloped defenses against artillery, and masonry-ashlar features to deter attackers.
Abandoned by the 18th century after sieges in the War of the Spanish Succession, the now-ruined structure hosted Archduke Charles of Austria and remains a symbol of feudal power amid olive groves, valued for its enduring defensive architecture.
