Castle of Floripes
Garrovillas de Alconétar, Spain, Spain
Castle of Floripes, also known as Castillo de Rocafrida or Alconétar fortress, is a medieval stronghold of Arab origin in Garrovillas de Alconétar, Cáceres province, Extremadura, Spain, built over Roman and Celtic foundations near the Tagus River.
Conquered by Fernando II of León in 1166 and gifted to the Knights Templar, it later passed to the Order of Alcántara in the early 13th century, serving as a strategic defense until the Templars' dissolution in 1312.
Now largely submerged under the Alcántara Reservoir since 1969, its tower occasionally emerges during droughts, preserving legends of chivalry involving Charlemagne's knights and the damsel Floripes amid the area's Reconquista history.
