Castle of Galeras
Spain, Spain
Castle of Galeras, perched on a 219-meter hill overlooking Cartagena's harbor in Murcia, Spain, is an 18th-century neoclassical fortress designed by engineer Pedro Martín Zermeño and completed in 1777 to protect the naval arsenal and city from invasions.
Built with a rectangular bastioned layout featuring four corner bastions, a dry moat, and connections to Charles III's defensive walls, it saw combat during the Peninsular War and notably served as the launch point for the 1873 Cantonal Revolution when rebels fired a cannon shot proclaiming independence.
Though now closed and used historically as a military prison, its strategic position offers hikers stunning panoramic views of the port, arsenal, and Mediterranean coast amid Cartagena's extensive fortification network.
